Dickinson Artists on Display Spotlight — Joni Pierson: Symmetry in Nature
Posted on 03/04/2020 at 11:46 AM by The Newsroom
Symmetry in everyday language refers to a sense of harmonious and beautiful proportion and balance. In art, it can mean so much more for both the viewer and the creator. For Waukee artist Joni Pierson of Inoj Art Studio, growing up surrounded by the symmetry of nature in small town Iowa instilled a sense of wonder in her as a child. That wonder led her to eventually become a professional artist.
“I’m inspired by geometric patterns and creating classic forms with unique colors,” Pierson said. “My hope is that people are moved by my vision.”
Her acrylic paintings stand at the intersection between modern abstracts and geometric shapes, and are often done in vivid, bold, or even midcentury colors, creating a sense of visual distance. Her work brings to mind elements of famous modern artists such Wassily Kandinsky and Piet Mondrian, and even pop artist Victor Vasarely with their eye-catching intensity.
But it’s the symmetry and Pierson’s clever vision for her pieces that draws your eye back for a second look – and keeps you thinking about what you’ve seen long after you move away.
Pierson’s work can be seen on display throughout 2020 at the Dickinson Law offices as part of the Artist on Display Program. Participating artists in the program will also be on hand to interact with the public during our 8th annual Open House held in conjunction with the Des Moines Art Festival on Friday, June 26th from 4-6:30 p.m.
If you are an aspiring artist interested in an innovative avenue to display your work to the public, we encourage you to submit an online application for the 2021 program today.
