Dickinson, Mackaman, Tyler & Hagen P.C. is pleased to announce that attorneys David Wetsch and Emily McGovern have joined the firm.

David brings over 40 years of experience to his general practice with an emphasis on banking, real estate, corporate issues, and estate planning. He comes to Dickinson Law from Wetsch, Abbot & Osborne, PLC, where he was a founding partner.

He received his undergraduate degree in management, finance and accounting from the University of Iowa, and his Juris Doctor from Drake Law School in 1979.

“I’ve known many of the attorneys at Dickinson Law for more than 30 years and I have a lot of respect for them and the firm. Joining Dickinson was a good fit for both myself and my clients. As I plan my path towards retirement, I plan to seamlessly transition my clients to the firm’s other lawyers and associates because I know they will be in good hands.”

Born in Mandan, ND, David has also lived in Fargo, ND, Minneapolis, MN, and he and his family moved to Iowa in 1968. He graduated from Urbandale High School, stayed in Iowa throughout college, and has practiced solely in the Des Moines area throughout his career.

Outside of the office, David is an avid deer and turkey hunter and he enjoys restoring antique cars, tractors and hit-and-miss flywheel engines.

Emily is an Associate in the firm’s Start-Up Group, assisting new companies with their legal needs at every stage as they become established. Her practice will focus on banking, mergers and acquisitions, corporate law, privacy matters, and cybersecurity issues.

She received undergraduate degrees in international studies and economics from the University of Iowa, her Juris Doctor at Washington University School of Law, and most recently a Master of Laws (LLM) degree focused on Law & Entrepreneurship from Duke University School of Law. Emily also brings extensive legal training, including serving as an intern at the National Consumer Law Center in Boston, MA and as a student attorney at the Entrepreneurship and Intellectual Property Clinic in St. Louis, MO.

“I’m excited to bring my knowledge in venture capital financing to startups and tech companies to the Des Moines and Iowa area. My experience working with entrepreneurs will help make Dickinson the go-to firm as this area continues to grow. We’re in the seed stage for startups and I want to be a supporter for these companies on the legal end.”

After growing up in Peosta in eastern Iowa, and gaining her legal training on a regional and national level, Emily chose to return to her native Iowa to start her practice.

“I wanted to be closer to family and support Iowa business and commerce through my legal practice. Combined with my law degree, my LLM  experience will be a good tool to help build an entrepreneur ecosystem in the area as well as through partnering with universities, incubators, and other startup organizations.”

In her spare time, Emily enjoys reading sci-fi fiction and is learning how to develop code.
