Dickinson, Mackaman, Tyler & Hagen, P.C. is pleased to announce our 2019 Summer Associates, Grace Bogart and Rachel Soderstrum.
GRACE BOGART
Grace is currently attending the University of Iowa College of Law where she will graduate with the class of 2020. Her undergraduate degree is in political science from Iowa State with a minor in philosophy. Her practice will be focused on Transactional Law with an interest in intellectual property rights, corporate transactions, and working with business associations.
With family members who are attorneys, Grace was exposed to the legal profession from an early age. “I’ve always respected the law as a noble profession of advocacy. I also had a professor at Iowa State who taught using the Socratic Method (a form of dialogue/debate to stimulate critical thinking) which inspired me to pursue a career in the legal profession. I knew I didn’t want to go into politics, so law school seemed like a natural next step.”
Grace first became interested in transactional issues while working in the retail art industry. “I love all types of art, and my first job was at a local art gallery in Des Moines; I worked there throughout high school and in the summers during college. I was also drawn to the Associate Program at Dickinson Law this summer because of its involvement in the art community here in Des Moines.”
When Grace isn’t studying or doing research, she is an avid runner, listens to and creates podcasts, and makes pottery. “I’ve lived in a few different places, but living in Iowa is what has most shaped me into the person I am today. Iowans are truly kind and genuine, and we have access to so many different cultures, foods and experiences, especially here in Des Moines.”
RACHEL SODERSTRUM
Rachel is currently attending Drake Law School where she will graduate with the class of 2020. She holds an undergraduate degree in social work from the University of Northern Iowa. Her practice will be focused on Litigation with an interest in employment and family law.
While helping people has always been Rachel’s focus, once she entered the professional working world, she soon found that she wanted to do even more by taking her career to the next level.
“I chose to pursue a career in the legal profession because after working briefly in the social work field, I discovered my passion for advocacy. While I enjoyed the day-to-day work I was doing, I found I wanted to be an advocate for the individuals I was working with on a broader scale, and law school seemed like the perfect next step. I’m excited about the experience I will gain at Dickinson Law this summer so I can continue to increase my knowledge and move closer to my goal of becoming an advocate for the people of Iowa.”
Growing up in the town of Adel, Rachel developed a love for sports and the Iowa outdoors and also has plans to remain in the state upon graduation. “I love biking, hiking, the occasional run for fun, and anything outdoors. Though some say there isn’t much to do in Iowa, I have found there is much to explore around the state. Iowa is also big enough to provide easy access to many great events and activities, yet small enough to get that Midwestern feel.”
