Dickinson, Mackaman, Tyler & Hagen P.C. is pleased to announce that attorney Rob Porter has joined the firm.
Porter has practiced law in Iowa for nearly 20 years, most recently as Director of Legal for Des Moines-based Dwolla, an acclaimed FinTech startup that provides a programmable payments platform that allows customers to securely transfer money.
At Dickinson Law, Porter’s practice will focus on three main areas law including Employment, Education (k-12 and higher education), and representing licensed individuals and organizations in regulated industries.
“I’m excited to join the firm,” Porter said. “The Dickinson firm is known for helping clients find workable solutions to complex business and regulatory challenges. I am honored to join in that work. I view the law as an opportunity to serve, and I enjoy helping businesses grow and individuals thrive.”
In his prior practice, Porter represented both public and private sector clients on complex labor and employment, regulatory, transactional, and operational issues. He previously served as Vice President, General Counsel for the Iowa Lottery Authority. In addition, Porter has worked as an Assistant Attorney General advising Iowa state agencies such as the Department of Education, the Division of Banking, the Department of Inspections and Appeals, the College Student Aid Commission, the Alcoholic Beverages Division, and the Economic Development Authority. Early in his career, Porter held in-house attorney positions at the University of Iowa and at educational testing company ACT, Inc., in addition to service in private practice.
Background
Porter grew up just across the Iowa border in South Sioux City, Nebraska. Over the years, he made a conscious decision to stay in the area, even when job opportunities were presented outside of the Midwest.
“Iowa is a wonderful place to live and work, and I’m honored to be given the opportunity to work with such a dedicated team of legal professionals here at Dickinson Law,” he said. “I’ve encountered several attorneys from the firm in my practice over the years, and I’ve always found them to be highly intelligent and very capable.”
Porter completed his B.A. summa cum laude from Doane College in 1998 with dual majors in political science and psychology, and went on to obtain his Juris Doctor degree with distinction from the University of Iowa College of Law in 2001.
Among the awards he has received for his work, Porter reports his biggest accolade was being chosen for the “Outstanding Achievement in Compliance” award at the GamblingCompliance 2018 Global Regulatory Awards in London. Porter received this award for his role in investigation, successful prosecution, and remediation of what World Lottery Association Magazine has called the “biggest lottery fraud of all time.”
Porter has a wife, Amy, who is a realtor in the Ankeny RE/MAX Precision office. Together, they have four children: Gracie, Ty, Zach and Nick.
