Introduction
John Lande’s practice includes a diverse array of civil litigation matters. He has experience dealing with a variety of legal topics including creditors’ rights in bankruptcy, business torts, agency regulatory actions, trademark disputes, environmental law, property taxation, municipal law, insurance and bond coverage disputes, mechanics’ liens and construction disputes, farm disputes, contract disputes, and business dissolutions. John has represented clients in numerous hearings and trials in Iowa district court, federal court, and appeals to the Iowa Court of Appeals, Iowa Supreme Court, and Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals.
John’s practice also includes bank regulatory issues. He advises banks with questions or issues related to cybersecurity, criminal investigations, fraud, confidentiality, insider transactions, mobile banking, collections, and wire transfers. His focus is on helping banks implement best practices to avoid litigation and disputes in the future. John has appeared at hearings before the Iowa Division of Banking, FDIC, and Federal Reserve in Iowa and Washington D.C.
John is chair of the firm’s Cybersecurity, Data Breach, & Privacy practice group. He regularly contributes to the firm’s Cybersecurity Law and Banking Law Blogs.

W. Des Moines Hotel Assocs., LLC v. Dallas Cnty. Bd. of Rev., 974 N.W.2d 540 (Iowa Ct. App. 2022) John represented county in a dispute over property tax assessment.
Steensma v. Buysman, Inc., 919 N.W.2d 766 (Iowa Ct. App. 2018) John represented owner of farm corporation in a business oppression case.

Bd. of Water Works Trustees of City of Des Moines, Iowa v. Sac Cty. Bd. of Supervisors, 2017 WL 1042072 (N.D. Iowa Mar. 17, 2017) (slip opinion). John represented Des Moines water utility in federal lawsuit claiming that agricultural drainage districts were violating the Clean Water Act, and other state and federal laws.
Bd. of Water Works Trustees of City of Des Moines v. Sac Cty. Bd. of Supervisors, 890 N.W.2d 50 (Iowa 2017). John responded on behalf of Des Moines water utility to questions certified to Iowa Supreme Court regarding federal lawsuit claiming that agricultural drainage districts were violating the Clean Water Act, and other state and federal laws.
Concerned Citizens of Se. Polk Sch. Dist. v. City of Pleasant Hill, Iowa, 878 N.W.2d 252 (Iowa 2016). John represented a school district that successfully challenged a municipality’s use of tax increment financing.
First Sec. Bank & Tr. Co. v. Vegt, 511 B.R. 567 (N.D. Iowa 2014). John represented a bank in an appeal to federal district court of a bankruptcy court’s decision to grant a priming lien in a Chapter 12 bankruptcy.
Polk Cty. Bd. of Review v. Vill. Green Co-Op, Inc., 849 N.W.2d 25 (Iowa 2014). John successfully represented Polk County Assessor and Board of Review in defending property tax classification of apartment buildings.
